Chapter 9.

For the second time in six days Adam stalked up Connell's path after lights out for the Mansell kids. He hadn't attempted to go over beforehand – despite an almost unbearable ache when he'd seen them drive up earlier that afternoon – because he was sure that whatever the outcome of this first initial skirmish between him and Connell he didn't want the kids to witness it. But the one thing he was sure of was that he was through playing games and backing off. One way or another before the night was through Connell was going to know exactly where Adam stood and what he wanted and then the other man was just going to have to learn to deal with it.

The look on Connell's face was not encouraging when Adam finally knocked enough to get him to open the door, but the look on his face when Adam fisted a hand in his t-shirt and yanked him out the door onto the porch pretty much made the top five list of comically shocked expressions that Adam had ever caused or been witness to.

“What the hell?” Connell's furious growl rumbled against Adam's clenched fist as he fought to regain his footing and twist free all at the same time. “What the hell do you think you're doing? Get off me.”

Agreeably Adam shoved him off balance against the porch rail, turned to make sure the door was on the latch, closed it smartly and then turned back to face Connell planting himself firmly in front of the door with his arms folded across his chest. “Good trip?”

Righting himself, Connell lunged towards his house and sanctuary. “Get out of my way.”

Adam spread his arms and said encouragingly, “Go ahead. Let's go a round. That's the only way you're getting round me until we talk this though.”

Connell pulled up short, his fists clenching tight against his thighs and stared bug eyed at the taller man. “Jesus, you're really not good at rejection are you?” Seething with anger, he struck out verbally, careful to keep out of reach of Adam's long arms. “What's the matter? Your ego can't take someone like me knocking back the big shot TV star?”

Determined to ride out the storm and stay calm, Adam rolled his eyes witheringly. “Yeah, Connell, that's it. I'm so used to people throwing themselves at my feet that I've completely flipped out that my next door neighbor’s knocked me back. Really, I'm a seething mass of bruised ego over here. Are you done now?”

Looking more enraged by the second at Adam's dryly amused response, Connell spat back, “No! I want you to fuck off and leave me and my family the hell alone!”

Adam stared steadily at Connell, saying levelly, “Well that's not going to happen either. You get things your own way too much as it is, man. Now we're doing things my way.”

Connell gaped at him incredulously, his muscles shivering with tension. “Who the hell do you think you are?”

Adam leaned back
